Third annual Billerica Police Road Race
The Third Annual Billerica Police Road Race will be held at 10 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Billerica Irish American Club, 616 Middlesex Turnpike, Billerica.

The children 10 and under 1K fun run begins at 10 a.m. with the 5K road race beginning at 11 a.m. All runners receive a free T-shirt. Awards will be given to top male and female runners in each division. A barbecue and entertainment will be held after the road race.

On August 6, at the Shaws Supermarket in Burlington, in conjunction with the Burlington Police Department, we will have Burlington’s “National Night Out”; this will be a fun event for all with free food and entertainment. The time is from 5:00PM until 9:00PM.

The following “Concerts on the Common” have been rescheduled for the following dates: The John Penny Band (Country) will perform at 7:00PM, Tuesday August 26; Eye 2 Eye will perform at 7:00PM, Tuesday, September 2. Both concerts will be on the Town Common.

THIRD ANNUAL STEVEN J. VERTUCCIO MEMORIAL RIDE FOR CYSTIC FIBROSIS. Please join for the 3rd Annual SJV Memorial Ride for CF. All proceeds will be donated to the Children's Hospital Cystic Fibrosis Center to help raise awareness and find a cure for CF. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system.

Squam Lake Cruise, Sightseeing trip. A deluxe, lavatory equipped motor-coach will head to New Hampshire where you will enjoy a lunch at Hart’s Turkey Farm, the tour will include a 90 minute narrated cruise on Squam Lake and a 45 minute Science Center naturalist presentation of New Hampshire wildlife. You will have time to visit shops at Meredith Weirs Beach and the Kellerhaus Christmas store. The trip is scheduled for Saturday, August 23; $89.00 (includes round trip transportation and lunch). Bus departs from the Recreation Center at 7:30AM with an approximate return of 6:30PM.

The Burlington Recreation Departments Youth Center has been underway on Friday evenings since September for grades 5-8. As always, the Youth Center offers many fun things to do, such as movies, video games, arts and crafts, board games, sports, ping pong, foosball and air hockey Special events and a snack bar are also part of the fun. The MacKay Library will be holding its annual Apple Pie Baking Contest on Monday, September 15 at 6:30 pm at the MacKay Library.

The 2nd Saturday of the month at 10:30 am is “Dads and Donuts” at MacKay Library.  Children ages 2 and up are invited to attend storytime at the Libray followed by a snack.  This is a popular storytime for dads, but moms are always invited.

Friends Book Sale - The annual Friends of the Library Book Sale is a significant source of funding for library programming, museum passes and many extras for Chelmsford patrons.  The community’s support through donations and volunteer hours is greatly appreciated.  The Friends 2007 Book Sale brought in $31,363. The next Chelmsford Friends of the Library Book Sale will take place September 26-September 28, 2008.

Community Dances open to all

Through funding provided by the Melrose Cultural Council and the Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church, Community Dances — featuring contra dancers and square dancers — are held on the third Saturday evening of each month. Appropriate for all ages, the Saturday evening dances, which run from 7-10 p.m. and are held at the Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church, across from the library, 70 West Emerson St. in Melrose, feature a live band of contra-dance musicians who play two fiddles, a four-string tenor banjo, cello and piano. “Sit-ins” of all varieties are encouraged (bring your own instruments and join in). Voluntary donations accepted.

Paint “Victorian Melrose”
All artists are invited to paint “Victorian Melrose” this summer and fall, and then participate in a show at the Beebe Estate in December.  Applications, which are available at melrosearts.com, should be completed in MS Word and emailed to sdclark47@verizon.net, or mailed to Luke Volpe, 7 Nowell Road, Melrose, MA 02176.
A list of streets and/or addresses will be sent to all those who respond by completing and submitting an application.  Artists can also visit http://melrose.patriotproperties.com/default.asp to access a list of all Melrose properties on the “painting” list.  The year and type of each house is included, and all houses labeled “Victorian”—and/or built in the Victorian Era, 1875-1900—will be eligible.
Participants may paint the whole house or just a detail; however, artists should not go into yards of the homes listed until organizers have contacted the owners first.
There is no fee to participate, but 25% of all sales will be donated to the Beebe Estate as a contribution to the interior painting that will be done there during the month of January 2009.

Helping Our Neighbors Concert
The second Helping Our Neighbors concert will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Church of the Nazarene, 2 Short St., Melrose.  Proceeds will benefit Bread of Life (thebreadoflifeonline.org), a local food pantry that serves Malden, Melrose, and the surrounding communities.
The concert will kick off with a special children’s show at 6:30 p.m., followed by five acts.  Admission to the main concert is $6, or $5 with a canned food item.  For the children’s show, admission is $6 per family.  Those attending the children’s show are welcome to stay for the main concert.
Sponsorships, beginning at $25, are now available for local businesses.  Last year’s event raised more than $700 for Bread of Life.  This year’s goal is $1,000.

Walk for Bread at Pine Banks Park
Pine Banks Park in Melrose will be the site of the Bread of Life’s 16th annual Walk for Bread and 5K Run Sunday, Oct. 5th.
Registration will begin at noon; the walk/run begins at 1p.m. at Pine Banks Park, Main Street, Melrose.
The event benefits Bread of Life, the local food pantry that helps feed the hungry and homeless in Melrose, Malden, Medford, Everett, and surrounding communities.  The even features free healthy snacks, a free water bottle, face painting, balloons, and live music.  Bring kids, bring the dog, enjoy the day.

Art lessons for all ages
The Melrose Arts and Cultural Association (MACA), a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the arts in Melrose, will bring art classes to the community this fall in a partnership with the Milano Senior Center.
The classes will include high-quality lessons for children and adults in such areas as watercolor, oil, and general, creative, self-expression with 2D and 3D materials.  Classes begin the second week in September; instructors include artists Tom Sutherland, Julie Fox, and Kris Rocolico.

Performances Planned for Middle School Auditorium
The auditorium at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School (MVMMS), a 900-sear, state-of-the-art facility that serves as the main auditorium for the school, will be home to a variety of performances in coming months. 
The Kaleidoscope Children’s Theater, a professional touring children’s theater company based in Cranston, RI, will perform “Cinderella’s Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 7.
On March 8, 2009, the Boston Lyric Opera will hold two performances of “The Magic Flute” in the facility.  The MVMMS Fine Arts Department and the Lyric Opera will work together to educate students and families about the composer and the opera before the performance.

The Melrose Symphony Orchestra is getting ready to begin its 91st season
The 2008-2009 season will include masterpieces by Beethoven and Brahms.  The opening concert will feature soprano Junko Watanabe, who will perform opera arias; pianist Miyuki Otani will perform in March; and the vocal duet of soprano Mara Bonde and baritone Donald Wilkinson will be the feature performance in May.  The Holiday Pops concert will feature world-renowned vocalist baritone Robert Honeysucker.
Subscriptions and ticket sales are already underway for the 2008-2009 season.  Tickets are available for all concerts at Melrose Drug Center, 462 Main St., and Sweet Thoughts, 504 Main St., both in Melrose.  In order to be listed in the program booklet, patrons must subscribe by Sept. 1.

Boston Summer Scholars - This summer, Boston Cares is pleased to be in a partnership with John Hancock Financial Services and The Boston Globe to support the 2008 Boston Summer Scholars Program. The Boston Summer Scholars program is providing 500 teenagers with on-the-job training in a corporate or non-profit environment, in addition to weekly skill-based workshops. Boston Cares is teaming up with The Boston Globe and John Hancock Financial Services to coordinate the Friday morning workshop series, which is covering topics such as personal finance, interviewing skills, and leadership.

Volunteer mentors are needed support the workshop sessions, which are held on Friday mornings, from 8:30 AM -10:30 AM – there are 4 left in need of volunteers – July 25 through August 15. (Volunteers are asked to get to the session by 7:45am). Volunteers are not required to attend all sessions, but are encouraged to sign up for as many as they are able to attend. Volunteers sit at a table with 9 youth, take attendance, participate in group activities during workshops, and distribute and collect surveys at the end.

The program still needs to recruit between 5 and 10 additional mentors for each week. Volunteers must be 21 years or older. Call 781-935-2244 for registration information.

The Recreation Commission is once again sponsoring its weekly "fun runs" at Horn Pond. This year they are hosted by "Friends of Woburn Track" and supported by the Shamrock Running Club.

There is no entry fee, and awards are given to the first three males and females in each age group.

Calling all artists! Recreation Brochure Drawing Contest - The Recreation Department is looking for a design for the cover of their Fall & Winter Brochure. The theme can be anything to do with recreation, fall, or winter - it is your choice. All Drawings must be submitted to the Recreation Department by August 7, 2008. The winner will be selected by the Recreation Commission and your design will be featured on our Fall & Winter Brochure.
