In memory of Jim McGarry, the Northern Bank Charitable Foundation would like to extend a big congratulations to the 2021 James E. McGarry Jr. Scholarship recipient Luke Witherell of Littleton. The scholarship was established in 2014 to honor the late “Jim” McGarry of Woburn and his 50 years of service at Northern Bank, as well as his lifelong affinity for, and ongoing support of the police and fire departments in the community. The $5000.00 scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors with a parent or natural guardian who is an active firefighter or police officer in one of the communities directly served by the Bank.
Luke recently graduated from Littleton High School after contributing greatly to the high school’s athletic and volunteer programs. Luke was a member and team captain of the Littleton High School soccer and lacrosse teams, and consecutively made the honor role for all four years of high school. He was also very active in the community, with over 296 community service hours at the time of his graduation. His most impactful volunteer experience was his time helping young children with disabilities play baseball through the Miracle League of MA athlete mentor program. He was an active member of the Humanitarian Club and volunteered at the Cor Unum Meal Center where he helped to feed the homeless and less fortunate.
Luke is the son of Westford Firefighter Mark Witherell and Kathleen Witherell and will be heading to Chatham University in the fall. He said that his father’s occupation as a firefighter has taught him to always put others before himself and inspired him to pursue a career in the medical field. Luke has already researched opportunities to volunteer at Chatham University where he will be pursuing a Human Biology integrated degree program towards a Physician’s Assistant. Best of luck to Luke and thank you for your dedication to the community!
