North Reading High Graduate Awarded Northern Bank McGarry Scholarship
Woburn, MA – Today Northern Bank announced that Samantha Galvin of North Reading, is the recipient of the 2020 James E. McGarry Jr. Scholarship.
The Northern Bank Charitable Foundation annually selects a child of one of our local police or firefighters as the recipient of the James E. McGarry scholarship. We want to congratulate our 2020 scholarship winner, Samantha Galvin! Graduating with a 4.0 from North Reading High School, Samantha will be attending Harvard University in the fall.
The scholarship was established in 2014 to honor the late “Jim” McGarry of Woburn and his 50 years of service at Northern Bank, as well as his lifelong affinity for, and ongoing support of the police and fire departments in the community. The $5000.00 scholarship was open to graduating high school seniors with a parent or natural guardian who is an active firefighter or police officer in one of the communities directly served by the Bank.
Ms. Galvin is the daughter of North Reading Firefighter, Barry Galvin, and Laurianne Galvin. She graduated from North Reading High School earlier this year where she was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Model United Nations Club and many other school clubs and sports programs including softball, volleyball and track. In addition to her academics and athletics, Ms. Galvin also volunteered over 365 hours of her time to community organizations such as Toys for Tots, North Reading Girls Youth Softball and Saint Theresa’s Parish to name a few.
In her scholarship essay, she wrote, “having a parent who serves the community means a constant sense of honor. At all times, wherever we go, my dad’s job never stops. His work as a firefighter has inspired me to want to serve the public too.”
This fall, Ms. Galvin will be attending Harvard University where she hopes to pursue a career in international government with the goal of, “improving the system to better serve disadvantaged communities and groups of people.”
